Love Bug Season is here in Florida

The dreaded love bug season has arrived here in Florida once again. Love bugs are a species of fly that will travel in swarms and are usually connected end to end during the mating process, hence their given name. Mating usually lasts a few days and females can lay up to 350 eggs once in their short lifetime. Females typically die off 3 to 4 days after laying eggs and males typically die off a few days after females.

Love bug season usually happens twice a year. From April through May and then again in August through September. Love Bugs are not dangerous to people however, they are more of an annoyance. They can wreak havoc on our vehicle’s paint job if not cleaned off. They are typically attracted to light colors and are hard to avoid when driving because they do travel in swarms. During love bug season, we are constantly driving through them which causes them to attach themselves to our vehicles. To avoid damaging the paint on our vehicles it is best to rinse them off regularly and keep a good coat of wax on your car to prevent any damage.

It's the acid in the bugs that can eat away at the paint so cleaning them from your car regularly will help prevent this. Although, they can be incredibly annoying, we only have to deal with this for a short period of time as their season and life span are short.
